Before we can discuss the confusion surrounding the question of a diet for acne prone skin, I think that we should first look at the relationship between diet & acne in general, and the facts about an effective acne diet, in particular.

Many in the medical community continue to insist that there is absolutely no relationship between your diet and acne formation. Let’s forget, for the moment, that I am living proof to the contrary, and just look at those claims at face value.

How can anyone, especially medical professionals, believe that the things that you put into your body will have no effect on the way your body reacts to those things? I feel that it’s safe to say that those that treat people with alcohol and drug addictions would surely have a different point of view on the subject.

Make no mistake, what you eat and drink will affect acne formation. The mistake is in looking for a diet for acne prone skin, because it’s not your skin that’s prone to acne…it’s your whole body!

Let me say that again. Acne is not a skin disease! Acne is a skin condition that is the result of other internal problems. In layman’s terms, your body has become overloaded with hormones, chemicals, toxins, or some combination of all three, and is using sebum oil (the root of all acne) to get rid of the overload.

Now, some will say that this reasoning isn’t valid because everyone is subject to developing the same internal overloads, but not everyone develops acne.

True enough. But, I would argue that acne formation is not a direct result of the overload itself. Acne is the result of your body’s reaction to the overload, and not all bodies react the same.

Some of us are blessed with bodies that have a natural tolerance for these overloads and are able to eliminate them through their natural waste process. Others have bodies that will emulsify the toxins in fat cells and simply store them. That’s why you see very few overweight people with acne.

For some, like you and me, the body reacts by emulsifying the toxins in sebum oil and sending it out through your skin. The larger the imbalance, the more sebum is produced. The oil tends to pool in skin pores and hair follicles, providing a perfect breeding ground for the P-acne bacteria. And, that is the beginning of every acne pimple that you have ever developed.

OKAY! (you say), but what does all of that have to do with a diet for acne prone skin?

Fair enough! Let’s start at the beginning.

Most of us first develop acne in our early teen years when we are leaving childhood behind and heading into adolescence. The change that occurs in your body causes natural hormone production to run wild, and hormonal overloads are the order of the day. Since your body is acne prone, it reacts by getting rid of the extra hormones in sebum oil, providing the foundation for acne formation. I think that you’ll agree that adding more hormones to this fire will only make the problem worse!

Got Milk? Got Acne! A simple glass of milk contains 59 different hormones that come from the cow and even more hormones that were in the steroids given to the cow to stimulate milk production. What do you suppose your body is going to do with all of these extra hormones.

And this is just one small example. Any effective diet for acne prone skin will stress the importance of eliminating most dairy products, as well as other harmful foods, from your diet.

It can get worse! Those of us cursed with bodies that have a really low tolerance for these imbalances find that acne follows us into our adult years. Since the raging hormones of your youth have settled down, you must look for another cause of your acne.

For me (and a host of others, apparently), it proved to be an intolerance for the chemicals and preservatives used in virtually all processed foods. My body reacted to these things the same way that it reacted to hormones in my teen years (sebum oil!).
