For most people, a heartburn remedy is needed from time to time to neutralize excess acid in the stomach. This condition is most often the result of an over indulgence of food and drink, or by consuming foods that may, in themselves, cause you to produce too much stomach acid.
I see no reason to go into detail about the causes of heartburn here. If you’re reading this, I feel sure that you are looking more for a heartburn remedy than an explanation of why you have it in the first place.
Before we begin, however, you need to be sure that you actually suffer from simple heartburn, and not something more serious, such as acid reflux or an ulcer. If you do suffer from one of these more serious conditions, the heartburn remedies we will share here will offer only temporary relief, and your discomfort will return, sometimes worse than before.
But, for simple, everyday heartburn, there are a few things that you can do now. In many cases, everything you need to make an effective heartburn remedy is already in your house. Let’s look at a few…
One of the best remedies for heartburn is simple baking soda. Take one heaping teaspoon of soda and put it in about 8 ounces of water. Stir the mixture until the soda is completely dissolved. You’ll know, because the water will, once again, turn clear. Drink the mixture as fast as possible (Do Not Sip). Now, sit back and get ready for the burps! This potion will not only neutralize the excess acid in your stomach, but, break up all of the “gas bubbles” that are in there, as well.
Another good heartburn remedy, if you have the ingredients handy, is to combine 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon of honey and 1 cup of warm water. This mixture can be sipped and is very effective, although not near as fast as the one above.
You can also combine 1 teaspoon of common yellow mustard and ½ cup of warm water. This is another very fast remedy for heartburn.
There are, of course, many other heartburn remedies floating around, but, the ones that we have shared here are proven to work on the occasional case of indigestion that hits us all from time to time.
We would be remiss, however, if we didn’t point out that, for those of you that suffer from chronic heartburn, you may be required to use these simple heartburn remedies too often. I believe that the best heartburn remedy for you is going to be found on your pharmacy shelf. Find and use one of the several acid reducers that are available.
Compounds such as cimetidine (brand name Tagemet) are pills that will actually shut down some of the “acid pumps” in your stomach, stopping them from over producing acid before heartburn ever strikes. Note that, when first starting this type of therapy, you may have to experiment with dosage a bit to find what’s best for you.
There is one other thing you may consider. You can completely revamp your diet and eliminate all of the foods that are known to cause indigestion. You know…all of the good ones. But, if you’re like me, that’s one heartburn remedy that won’t even be considered, let alone implemented.
