People have been using home remedies for heartburn since the days of wizards and shaman healers. Even then, it was widely known that Mother Nature had provided us with things that would stop the burning and discomfort associated with acid reflux (the primary cause of heartburn).
Acid reflux is the name given to a condition that occurs when some of the acid in your stomach backs up into your esophagus, the tube that takes food from your mouth to your stomach. Unfortunately, your esophagus does not have the protective lining that is in your stomach, so the acid causes a burning pain in your chest. In severe cases, you may actually think that you are suffering a heart attack.
Obviously, effective home remedies for heartburn must either prevent the acid reflux from occurring in the first place, or, once reflux is present, do something to neutralize the acid that has backed up into your esophagus.
Of course, the most effective home remedy is to prevent the heartburn from happening in the first place. Since this discussion is about home remedies for heartburn, I see no reason to include the many over-the-counter medicines that are designed to do this very thing (omeprazole, famotidine, etc). I will say, however, that since the number one cause of heartburn is over eating, the number one prevention is probably the Push Away Diet. It’s a very simple diet that requires only that you push away from the damn table before you pack your stomach with too much food, leaving stomach acid with only one way to go…UP!
I suppose, though, that, since you’re reading this, the “SS HEARTBURN” has already sailed, so, let’s look at some home remedies for heartburn that should bring you some relief.
I must say that, as a frequent over-eater myself, my first choice for a heartburn home remedy is plain, everyday baking soda (Arm & Hammer, etc). Nothing, not even commercial antacids, works as well, or as fast, for me. In addition, not only will this potion neutralize excess acid, but it will also break up gas bubbles that can cause you considerable discomfort.
To use this remedy, take 1 rounded teaspoon of your favorite baking soda, place it in about 4 ounces of water, and stir until the water is totally clear (this may take a couple of minutes of stirring). Drink the potion (do not sip!) and get ready for the burp-fest that’s coming. Relief should come very quickly!
Another of my favorite heartburn home remedies is vinegar, a very powerful acid neutralizer. The only reason I make it number 2 is the fact that, at least for me, vinegar doesn’t do a whole lot for the gas bubbles.
If you decide to try vinegar, drink 1 to 2 ounces as if you were doing shots of whiskey, and always follow it with a plain water chaser. This should get rid of the excess acid without the burp-fest that is caused by baking soda.
I realize that, for some of you, taking straight shots of vinegar may be a bit much, even with the water chaser. For those people, making a 4 to 6 ounce 50/50 mixture of apple cider vinegar and water will work almost as well.
While I know that there are a plethora of home remedies for heartburn floating around cyberspace, keep in mind that the ones that I have given you here have been proven to work by the only researcher I truly trust…ME!
