How To Prevent Hair Loss in Men and Women

At some point in life, most men, and more than a few women, will start to suffer hair loss. The degree of loss may vary from one person to another, but, once it begins, learning how to prevent hair loss will become your primary goal. There are things that you can do, and things that you can use, that will help you to stop losing hair now!

How to Prevent Hair Loss Begins With Learning Why

The most widely known reason for hair loss in men is male pattern baldness (aka: Androgenetic Alopecia), which is believed to be an inherited condition. It has been suggested that the reasons for this type of hair loss are the same as for general hair loss, but that the pattern of hair loss (specific areas as opposed to “all over”) develops due to the individual man’s genetic make-up. This being the case, someone suffering from male pattern baldness can prevent hair loss by following the same tips below for preventing general hair loss.

Hair loss that is not related to a medical condition is most often a result of testosterone (the male sex hormone) being transformed into dihydrotestosterone (aka: DHT) by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. (OH! And, Yes, Girls, you have testosterone in you also.)

DHT acts on a hormone receptor in your hair follicles causing them to slow hair production and make what little hair that is produced shorter and weaker than normal hair. It will often stop hair production completely in some follicles, resulting in gradual loss of hair over time.

For us, then, learning how to prevent hair loss means we must learn to slow, or, better yet, stop this process.

Preventing Hair Loss with Small Lifestyle Changes

There are some things that you can do to help stop, or, at least slow, hair loss. Most of you probably do one or two of these already, but, chances are that you can do them better. Any that you’re not doing should be started immediately.

  • Keep Your Hair Short!   Longer hair puts more strain on hair follicles, making it easier for your hair to fall out. Short hair also makes it easier to…
  • Practice Good Scalp Hygiene!   Wash your hair often, making sure that all shampoo and conditioner is completely rinsed out. Take care to insure that all hair products (hair spray, mousse, etc) are completely washed out, as well.
  • Take a Complete Multi-Vitamin Daily!   And, eat a well rounded diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Although not scientifically proven, a lot of anecdotal evidence suggests that proper nutrition is a powerful weapon in the fight to prevent or slow hair loss.
  • Reduce Stress!   Stress can cause you body to over-produce all kinds of hormones and enzymes, including those we mentioned above. If you have a lot of stress in your life (for whatever reason), you have to learn to shake it off or, better yet, start taking an effective stress relief supplement.

People that are suffering from mild hair thinning may find that these things alone are enough to stop you from losing hair. Most of us, however, will need a bit more help.

Things That Help Prevent Hair Loss

There are products out there that will help in hair loss prevention. In fact, there are lots of products that claim to help. In reality, however, there are only three that have received FDA approval to show that their claims are real.

One of these, finasteride (brand name: Propecia), is available only by prescription. Although this medication is very effective, it carries certain risks that your doctor can explain much better, and more accurately, than we can.

Prevent Hair Loss with Minoxidil

Minoxidil, originally developed by Rogaine, is an FDA approved over-the-counter remedy that thousands (millions ?) of men and women have found will not only prevent hair loss, but, in some cases will actually stimulate new hair growth. The original patent for it has expired, so it’s now available in a number of hair loss treatment products. The one minoxidil product that we recommend is Hairisol, from HealthBuy. We like it because (1) it works! & (2) the manufacturer is so sure that it will help you that they offer a free trial of the product. Click Here to sign up for your free trial supply today!

In addition to minoxidil, you may also want to get the HairMax LaserComb, just recently approved by the FDA to help prevent hair loss. It’s like using a hot comb, but actually uses a laser rather than heat to treat hair loss. It is a bit pricy, but, if it works (and many, many folks say it does!), it may well be worth the price.
