For many people, finding a remedy for constipation involves nothing more than a quick trip to the medicine cabinet to take one of the many laxative products that are available. Although this will usually relieve your problem, it’s not always the best idea. This is especially true if you suffer frequent, or chronic constipation.
The plain fact is, using a laxative as a remedy for constipation can (and often does) make you laxative dependent. Your body gets accustomed to the laxative and stops producing the natural fluids that are necessary for natural bowel movements. Then, the laxative ceases being a convenience and becomes necessary for proper bowel functions.
Of course, when you’re in the middle of a severe case of constipation, you’re looking for relief, not information.
OKAY, then…I’ll relate a remedy for constipation that my dear Grandmother from the Piney Woods of Deep East Texas gave to me many years ago. I must warn you, though, use this remedy only if you have nothing else to do for the rest of the day! You will need to be close to the toilet!
You’re going to need about 2 quarts (or, liters) of purified drinking water. Granny used water straight from her well, but, chances are that you don’t have that option, so some high quality drinking water will do.
You’ll also need to get some sea salt. If you can find the gray-colored salt, by all means, use it. It’s the highest quality.
To make your constipation-busting potion, put the water in a sause pan and heat it on the stove as if you were making tea. When it’s hot, stir in one heaping tablespoon of the sea salt and stir until the salt is completely dissolved. You can add some lemon or lime juice to moderate the taste, if you’d like.
Sip (don’t gulp) as much of the mixture as you can over a period of about one hour. You may feel a slight case of nausea or a slight headache, but that’s not unusual, so don’t worry about it. Normally, it will pass quickly.
Now, just sit back and wait. This potion will go through your digestive system rather quickly. Usually, within an hour or so, you’ll begin to visit the bathroom a lot! These visits will continue until all of the salt solution has passed from your body, taking all of the waste material with it.
This is a very powerful remedy for constipation, and afterward, you may feel a bit drained (no pun intended!). Use the rest of the day to rest and relax. Be sure to drink lots of water, as the potion has probably caused you to dehydrate a bit. Also, some chicken soup (believe it or not) will help replace some of the electrolytes that have been removed by the treatment.
You may even want to use a little of the time to read the rest of this article and learn about some simple lifestyle changes that you can make so that using this constipation remedy again won’t be necessary.
Absent a medical condition, your constipation was likely the result of insufficient water and a bad diet. I think it’s a sign of the times, actually. In today’s world, just staying even is a full time endeavor, and we sometimes forget to take care of ourselves. If this is true for you (and, I’d bet that it is!), I’d like to make a couple of suggestions that will surely help.
• Drink More Water! You can’t expect your digestive system to function without sufficient water. Health experts say that we should drink one ounce of water for every two pounds of body weight every day. So, if you weigh 200 pounds, you should drink 100 ounces of water every day. I know that this sounds like a lot, but, it’s actually only about 12 glasses, and you have 24 hours to work with. If you decide to disregard this one thing, you may just as well stop reading now.
• Stay Out of Fast Food Joints! Occasional visits may be okay, but, there is virtually nothing in processed foods that is good for you. They are full of chemicals and preservatives that keep them fresh and pretty, but, in your body, can become toxic.
Instead, how about fresh meats and vegetables that you prepare yourself, or eat at a real restaurant. The vegetables are especially important, as they are a source of fiber, the part of the vegetable cells that your body can’t digest. The fiber passes through your body intact and drags other waste material with it. If, of course, you’re drinking enough water.
Fresh fruit is also an excellent source of fiber. You know what they say…”An apple a day…” Grapes (of any color) are probably the best, but any and all fresh fruit (except, perhaps, bananas) is good!
Now, after going through Dear Ole’ Granny’s remedy for constipation, don’t you feel that these small changes in lifestyle are worth not having to go through it again?
